Understanding the homeschooling laws and legalities in your state will prove to be a little confusing at first since no state is the same on how they treat homeschooling in terms of legitimacy.

In historical accounts, the right to teach your own children in the privacy of your home has long been debated in the United States. Several lawmakers, advocates, educators and parents; both pros and antis, have widely deliberated this issue ever since the onset of the compulsory education in Massachusetts on 1852.

Nowadays, the focal point of the homeschool discussion has already shifted from the question of its legality to the issues of less significant stature, such as the access to a state’s school funds, facilities, and other resources; the control for quality; college admissions; and standardized testing among others.

As mentioned, understanding the homeschooling law and legalities in your state may seem to be complicated but with enough research and patience, you will begin to comprehend the stand of your state in regards to homeschooling.

First, it must be said that homeschool is legal in all 50 states of the United States. In connection to the ruling handed by the US Supreme Court, it stated that the Amish have the right to keep their children out of public schools because of their religious beliefs. It was also stated that the parents have the fundamental right to educate their children in a way that is acceptable to their religious faith; as long as these teachings will not contradict any laws or it will not disrespect the fundamental rights of any person.

With this ruling, it was already implied that the right to educate their children in the privacy of their homes is their fundamental right as a parent.

After this, many other court rulings in favor of the parents’ wish to educate their children in home school were handed

Now every state has their own judgment in regards to this issue and each of these states have created laws and regulations to somehow manage this so ruled fundamental right. Understanding homeschool laws and legalities in your state can actually be summarized into three categories:

a. Regulations and homeschool laws in other states are based on their treatment of such as a private school. Examples of these states are California, Texas, and Indiana. In these places, homeschool laws are the same as those laws that govern the other non-accredited schools.

b. Another category, the laws are based on the unique ruling of the state in regards to the state’s compulsory attendance with a specific mention to “homeschool” requirements. States that have this treatment are New Jersey and Maryland among others

c. Last category, other states like New Hampshire, Maine, and Iowa have a specific ruling for homeschooling. These states often have different terms applied for homeschool like “home instruction” in Virginia; “alternative instruction” in South Dakota; and “competent private instruction” in Iowa.

It is known that apart from these categories, all the 50 states have a different way of treating homeschool and its students. Some may require less than the others and some have very stringent qualifications in order to be considered as a passable home school attendee.

These are generalized state laws that tackle private education. Try to find your specific state law regarding homeschooling in order to maximize the benefits that you can get from the state; not to mention the requirements being asked by your state from you.

Homeschooling = Smarter, Happier Kids

Homeschooling is an option for parents to take on the responsibility of educating their children at home.

Advocates of homeschooling cite several benefits, including better academic test results, poor schooling environment, improved character/morality development, and objections to what is taught in local schools. In addition to that, parents will get to spend a LOT of time with their children.

Three of the main concerns regarding homeschooling are:

  • Commitment. Homeschooling is very time consuming, and will eat into parents’ personal time and time for fulfilling other responsibilities. Also, while homeschooling can be accomplished rather inexpensively, the teaching parent won’t be able to hold a separate job, and the family thus suffers from a loss of income.
  • Socialisation. Homeschoolers are likely to have limited social interaction with others, and are sheltered from mainstream society. Furthermore, homeschoolers will often be subjected to their parents’ one-sided point of view.
  • Higher education. Many, but not all, universities admit homeschoolers. While a homeschooler’s academic track record may not be well documented, universities have ways around this, such as entrance exams and key test results.

In Malaysia, parents who wish their child to be exempt from public schooling have to apply to the Ministry of Education.

Speech and Language Therapy for Children With Autism

What is it?

The goal of speech therapy is to improve all aspects of communication. This includes: comprehension, expression, sound production, and social use of language (1). Speech therapy may include sign language and the use of picture symbols (2). At its best, a specific speech therapy program is tailored to the specific weaknesses of the individual child (1). Unfortunately, it can be difficult to create a child-specific, evolving, long-term speech therapy plan (1, 3).

The National Research Council describes four aspects of beneficial speech therapy-

(1) Speech therapy should begin early in a child’s life and be frequent.

(2) Therapy should be rooted in practical experience in the child’s life.

(3) Therapy should encourage spontaneous communication.

(4) Any communication skills learned during speech therapy should be generalizable to multiple situations (4).

Thus, any speech therapy program should include practice in many different places with many different people (2). In order for speech therapy to be most successful, caregivers should practice speech exercises during normal daily routines in the home, school, and community (1, 5). Speech therapists can give specific examples of how best to incorporate speech therapy throughout a child’s day (6).

What’s it like?

Speech therapy sessions will vary greatly depending upon the child. If the child is younger than three years old, then the speech therapist will most likely come into the home for a one hour session. If the child is older than three, then therapy session swill occur at school or in the therapist’s office. If the child is school age, expect that speech therapy will include one-on-one time with the child, classroom-based activities, and consultations between the speech therapist and teachers and parents (2).

The sessions should be designed to engage the child in communication. The therapist will engage the child through games and toys chosen specifically for the child. Several different speech therapy techniques and approaches can be used in a single session or throughout many sessions (see below).

What is the theory behind it?

Children with autism not only have trouble communicating socially, but often also have problems behaving. These behavioral problems are believed to be at least partially caused by the frustration associated with the inability to communicate. Speech therapy is intended to not only improve social communication skills, but also teach the ability to use those communication skills as an alternative to unacceptable behavior (1).

Does it work?

Many scientific studies demonstrate that speech therapy is able to improve the communication skills of children with autism (1). The most successful approaches to speech therapy include: early identification, family involvement, and individualized treatment (3). There are many different approaches to speech therapy and most of them are effective. The table below lists some of the different approaches. In most cases a speech therapist will use a combination of approaches in a program.

Is it harmful?

There are no reports of speech therapy being harmful.

Cost

The cost of speech therapy is covered by the government through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The amount of speech therapy provided in this setting may be suboptimal and thus should be supplemented with private therapy. Private speech therapy can be expensive (approximately $100/hour)

Speech therapy requires parental investment of time. In order to be most effective, parents should be fully integrated into the therapy program and should seek out opportunities to practice communication throughout the daily routine. With time, this should become a new way of life.

Resources

Autism is a condition covered under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Services covered by IDEA include early identification and assessment and speech language pathology (speech therapy). This law protects the rights of patients with autism and provides guidelines to assist in their education. It covers children from birth to age 21 (U.S. Department of Education Web site). Pediatricians can provide contact information for the state early intervention program (for children 0 to 3 years old). School districts will coordinate special services for children 3-21 years old.

Online Drivers Education – Learn to Drive Online

Learning to drive is something that many people of all ages need to find a way to do. There are a couple of options for this; if you are young, you may need to take drivers education classes. If you are older, you may need to figure out how to drive on your own.

I believe that no one should learn to drive on their own. Online drivers education is available and can help anyone learn to drive online quickly and easily.

The reason why I think that online drivers education is so great is because the resources available are just as good, if not better than formal and more traditional classes with an instructor. Using an online program to learn how to drive is just like doing drivers ed, but at your own pace and time.

Most online drivers education programs will offer a variety of learning tools including videos, a drivers handbook, and tips for passing your test. The videos are what I believe can be the most effective learning tool because you can see exactly what needs to be done to do proper driving maneuvers.

Now, keep in mind that these online drivers education programs are not only for older people. I highly recommend them for teenagers who are looking to get their drivers license. Formal drivers education classes are great but they often do not give enough personal attention to each student.

Online drivers education is a great way to supplement a real drivers ed class and make the new driver even more prepared for their written and road tests.

In closing, if you are looking to learn to drive online and take the biggest step towards getting your drivers license, online drivers education may be a good fit for you.

Homeschool Teaching – Four Rules to Success

You have decided to homeschool your children. Now, you need to learn and to follow the five rules of homeschool teaching success.

The first rule is select a homeschooling school to provide your educational materials. Homeschooling schools are institutions which provide a full range of services to parents who homeschool their children. Particularly, such schools provide a core set of courses to meet state requirements, as well a selection of electives. In addition, most homeschooling schools issue student identification cards and diplomas.

Secondly, join a homeschooling association. A homeschooling association will keep you up to date on legal requirements for your state and help guide you in complying those requirements. The association will also act as your advocate before state education officials and policymakers, much like a parents/teachers association does for public schools. Further, associations can help you with the administrative end of homeschooling.

Thirdly, you should subscribe to a homeschooling magazine. A good home schooling magazine is critical to the success of parents who are thinking about, or have already made the decision to home school their children. This is because homeschooling can be complicated and downright scary to those who may not know where to start. And as a busy parent, why reinvent the wheel?

I checked out a few of these and was impressed with the link for “Homeschooling Today: A Journal for Home Discipleship which those interested in a Christian education experience would be interested in. Another site, :The Teaching Home,” has been around for over 27 years and presently offers only an online version of its magazine. Like Home Discipleship, The Teaching Home is written within a Christian context.

Fourthly, join a homeschooling parents online forum. Such forums provide a unique opportunity for you to interact with other parents and share your wisdom with them as well as seek their advice. Sometimes, you might feel alone during your homeschooling experience. Other parents are there to assure you that you are not alone and that you are a vital member of a large and informed community.

You decided to homeschool your children because you want the best for them. Now, insure that success by following the above four rules. Happy homeschool teaching!

The Effects of An International Education in Emerging Countries

The 21st Century has signified one great change in the way the people are Educated, especially in Emerging Countries. One example has been implementing International Education, into the local Educational system.

A good example of this is in Indonesia.

In the space of ten years, Indonesia has de-regulated the once rigid State Education system, and allowed localized private Schools to offer International Education to its own citizens, as well as expatriate children.

This has allowed Indonesian-based students to study locally Cambridge, International IB, and UK IGCSE programs in private Schools in the Cities, and Towns across the Islands of Indonesia. And produced some amazing results with Indonesian children often ranking alongside their British and American counterparts, equally.

Some critics of this policy have stated whilst the State provided Education system sometimes lacks the basic facilities, a new “elite” of Western Educated Indonesians are being created, who can afford the higher school fees to enter these Internationalized Schools.

But studies have showed that in the 1990’s, this new educated “elite” were often sent to study in Singapore, Australia and the USA, and now their Western-educated Parents prefer them to study closer to home. It also allows more Indonesians to allow their children to get an International Education, when they previously could not afford to send them overseas.

Many Indonesians have always looked Westwards towards getting a better Education, with many Indonesians today working in the nations urban centers holding Degrees mainly  from American , and Australian-based Universities.

Local Critics cite the recent Economic meltdown in Countries outside Indonesia, claiming that perhaps as Economies failed – so has the Education system wstem that created the Leaders who presided over the economic decline of many of these Countries, and Indonesia imitates these Countries too much.

The “westernized” Education system these Schools offer ,are Internationalized- but also in the long term may teach values of Countries some say are alien to the local culture. Values that are based on “pop” culture, and Western ideas, rather than Indonesian “family values.”

Some Academics see this trend as disturbing, when a new generation of “western” Educated Indonesians may run Indonesia, at a time when some economists do predict that China, and India could be the main influence on Indonesian society.

Other Critics state that students lose their cultural identity, and become less of a National Citizen, but more of a global Citizen. Identifying with the United States more than their own culture, and often migrating there, once they have finished studying.

Those that agree the changes are beneficial, claim that Indonesia will have a new generation of citizens both ready and able to cooperate, and compete in business with their Western counterparts. Bringing wealth to Indonesia.

However to most Indonesians, an International Education offers opportunities in Indonesian society and beyond, that a State system can only provide from certain Schools. And until that changes, hundreds of thousands of Indonesian children, will attend local Schools studying IB programs, and IGCSES, and in some cases gain higher examination results than their counterparts in the USA and Europe.

Parents join online and community homeschooling groups to learn methods of locating, making, and trading resources to decrease the cost of homeschooling. Those seeking free resources can also find support from homeschooling bloggers and websites who understand the basic need to control costs in order to afford homeschooling.

One group of homeschoolers who have worked hard at helping parents understand how to reduce and control costs of homeschooling are unschoolers. Unschoolers have advocated child led learning and teaching from the child’s natural environment. This naturally reduces the cost of education. Those who explore the techniques of unschooling can find ways to incorporate new ideas for educational opportunities even if one decides not to adopt all of the philosophy.

The local library provides more resources than many people realize. The most obvious resources are of course books, DVD’s, and audio books. Some libraries offer specific curriculum materials in a variety of formats that parents and teachers can borrow. It is important to ask as often times only teachers are aware of the resources. The Internet provides a variety of free homeschooling options for parents. Some school districts are providing free online charter schools to parents who want to enroll online. This option provides parents with free curriculum, but does tie parents to a public school curriculum. However, parents seeking free resources can find a wide range of subject and age level materials available online. Homeschooling blogs and websites provide parents with access to resources to use online or to print out and use with lessons. Parents can also get informed about local areas that offer educational opportunities.

Driver Education Videos

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death. Therefore, one of the most important programs a young person can participate in is driver’s education. While driving school education is extremely beneficial for students nothing compares to seeing real situations and watching the consequences of bad driving on video. It sends across a clear message to the students that reckless and irresponsible driving is dangerous. They can see for themselves and hear from people who have been through such bad experiences.

Driver education videos are visually engaging with lots of graphics and real life scenarios that can be graphic at times. Some videos show actual footage of vehicle fatalities and injured victims. Dangers of driving under the influence is another must see video. It helps students understand the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Students understand that drinking and driving can be devastating and that lives can be changed in a split second if they are not responsible drivers.

Teachers – Want a Private Education For Your Children But You Cannot Afford It?

You need to teach overseas! Pick a country, any country, and there will be at least one international school there. International Schools offer private education for expatriate’s children worldwide. And, while most of the parents have to pay school fees, one of the conditions nearly always included in the contracts of international teachers is free education for the teachers’ children. There are over 4000 international schools worldwide, all requiring teachers to staff them, many of them offering excellent quality private education.

Picking a school that suits both your children’s needs and yours can be challenging, but it is possible. In a recent interview I conducted with international teachers, Maggie Hos-McGrane, an international teacher of 19 years experience said that after she had completed her research she’d found only 30 of the more than 4000 international schools suited both her and her children. If you have children, here are some things you should consider when applying for teaching posts abroad in international schools.

Is the school a profit making enterprise?

There are a number of different kinds of international schools to choose from, some are run by a board and are not designed to make a profit, and others are run by an individual or company in order to make a profit.

As a teacher you will be concerned that the school’s educational philosophy matches your own. As a parent you want to insure that your children’s education is the priority of the school, rather than the amount of money spent on educational materials and the effect that will have on the school’s owner’s profit.

There are some directors or owners of international schools that may be more interested in the financial benefits of running a school than the education benefits to the students. Be aware, both as a prospective employee and as a parent.

Is the school accredited?

International schools can become accredited by an organization that sets educational and operational standards for international education institutions. One such organization is the Council of International Schools (CIS). In order for an international school to become accredited by CIS, they must go through a rigorous appraisal process which looks at the staff and management, the facilities and, the quality of teaching and learning in the school.

If an international school is accredited, then you can be confident that the quality of education provided by the school is high. Most schools that are accredited by an organization like CIS advertise their status on their webpage, brochures and stationery.

Other organizations that offer accreditation for international schools are NEASC, COBISEC, ISCIS and the Association of Christian Schools International, to name a few.

How many students are in the school?

This is particularly of concern for parents of high school aged children as the number of students in a school may affect the number of subject choices offered at higher levels. For example, if there are only 30 students in the graduating class, then the school will have to limit the number of subjects being offered to make it cost effective. This can often affect profit and non-profit making schools alike.

Additionally, the number of students in the school can affect the number and type of extra curricular activities offered, and therefore your child’s opportunities to experience team sports and other activities that are usually run after school.

When a school has a large number of students, this can also mean that the school is more likely to have a well-stocked library, well equipped laboratories, up-to-date computer equipment and outdoor activity areas. This is usually true of larger schools simply because there is a larger pot of money to fund these facilities from.

On the other hand a school that has thousands of students, while usually offering a wide variety of subjects and activities for students, can often be an anonymous place for children. It is up to you to decide what a good balance is for you and your family.

Which curricula do the schools subscribe to?

There are international schools abroad that offer what is essentially a national curriculum. In fact, in the case of many British schools abroad, it’s even called the National Curriculum.

You can find international schools that are running the national curriculum from America, the UK, Australia, Canada, France (usually taught in French), and so on. Securing a teaching contract in an international school that offers the national curriculum that you and your children are used to will help ease the transition. However, you are not limited by the curricula that you have taught in the past, international schools are generally looking for good teachers and realize that teachers can adapt and teach any curriculum.

When you are looking for a good school for your children, you may run up against some curricula that you haven’t come across before. For example, there is the school wide system offered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). The IBO offers the Primary Years Programme up to Year 6, the Middle Years Programme from Years 7 to 11, and the Diploma Years Programme for Years 12 and 13.

Which examinations will your children be working towards?

There are a number of examinations available for international school students, and you will need to understand the options before making any decisions about accepting an employment contract.

I mentioned the IBO previously as being a school wide programme. However many schools adopt bits and pieces of the programme. You may find that an international school offers the Diploma for the upper two years but offers the British IGCSE for Years 10 and 11. IGCSE is an examination based qualification, and the IBO Middle Years Programme has no formal examination assessment, students get a certificate and a record of achievement.
